Thanksgiving Day falls on every fourth Thursday of November in each calendar year. Thus, Thanksgiving Day in 2024 will fall on November 28. The tale of Thanksgiving dates back to the 1620s when Pilgrims and Puritans moved to America from England. They took along their cultural habits concerning food to America. The day of Thanksgiving was different from place to place since Thanksgiving was observed on dates varying from place to place. Yet, with the end of the 19th century, the last Thursday came to be identified as the day of Thanksgiving. It was during 1863 when Thanksgiving was pronounced to be a national holiday by US President Abraham Lincoln, and it officially began on the last Thursday of November.
In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the day of Thanksgiving from the last Thursday to the fourth Thursday of November. He did so because Christmas shopping started a week earlier, and thus would begin stimulating the economy. Thus, from that date, Thanksgiving found a place in reviving the economy. This was permanent, and from 1942, Thanksgiving was celebrated on the fourth Thursday itself.
There was a question in the minds of some that why Thanksgiving could not be held on Friday so that people can automatically get a three-day holiday. The answer to this is quite interesting. In the 17th century, the Puritans considered Friday to be fast days, and they did not like to observe this tradition. They prepared for Shabbat on Saturday and worshipped on Sunday. Thus, they established the holiday of Thanksgiving to be held on Thursday, the day before Shabbat. Thus, Thanksgiving started being celebrated on Thursday and now it has become a four-day obligatory holiday, where Friday is a day off that gives time for rest and spending time together with relatives and children.
The holiday day of Thanksgiving has remained basically connected with the spirit of gratitude, sympathy, and generosity. Despite its change in the system, the day is still a family gathering. People gather around and relish the classic dishes that mainly include turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and cranberry sauce. The day is also organized to provide support to various destitute members of the society. It is common for food drives to be organized and free meals are provided so that all sections can enjoy what this day actually signifies.
