The Importance of Healthy Teeth for Overall Well-Being

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Besides giving you the aesthetic appeal, a bright and healthy set of teeth may also be key to your good health, said experts on Tuesday, ahead of World Oral Health Day on March 20. The theme this year is “A happy mouth is a happy body.”

Experts emphasized the importance of oral health in overall well-being, highlighting how neglecting oral health can lead to various issues including gum disease, decay, and even systematic health problems like heart disease and diabetes. Dr. Nitika from Fortis Hospital Greater Noida advised against sugary drinks, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption for maintaining a healthy mouth.

Dr. Ragini Sehgal Sethi from Medanta Hospital Lucknow stressed the importance of proper oral hygiene, as poor oral health can lead to oral infections, tooth decay, and gum disease. She also mentioned how oral health issues can impact food choices, weight loss, gastrointestinal disturbances, communication, self-esteem, and overall well-being.

Studies have linked oral infections, especially periodontitis, with systemic diseases like cardiovascular disease, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and more. To maintain good oral health, experts recommend brushing at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, and regular visits to the dentist for check-ups and cleaning. World Oral Health Day serves as a reminder to prioritize oral health for a happy and healthy body.
