Each year, about 35 million people seek treatment from a chiropractor. Knowing when to see a chiropractor is crucial to ensuring you receive the necessary treatment in a timely manner.

It can be intimidating or nerve-wracking to consider going if you’ve never been to a chiropractor before. This can lead people to avoid going, which will only contribute to them feeling worse. The best thing to do is face your ailment head-on.

This guide will help you understand what to expect when visiting a chiropractor for the first time.

1. It Will Take a While

Receiving chiropractic care shouldn’t be a rushed appointment. Plan for your first chiropractor appointment to take about an hour. They will want to know why you made your appointment, medical history, current and past injuries or conditions, and any medication you currently take.

Many modern offices will have new patient paperwork available online. You can fill it out and either submit it in advance or bring it with you. This streamlines the intake process during your first visit.

2. Physical Exam

Once you’ve completed the paperwork and the chiropractor has learned everything they need to know, they will perform a physical exam. They will look at your spine, joint movement, and even the way you walk.

They may also perform other tests, such as reflexes, flexibility, and muscle strength. This helps the chiropractor know what your physical condition and limitations are. It can also help them to understand where they can assist in improving your posture and overall health.

3. Treatment

If they determine that you need a chiropractic adjustment, they may commence treatment at your first visit. You’ll need to lie back on a special table designed for treatment.

A reputable chiropractor will explain the treatment and what they will do before they do it. That way, you can feel comfortable and know what to expect.

The chiropractor will work with the part of your body that needs adjustment. Typically, this is the head, neck, or back. They will assist you in moving to your maximum range.

Once at this point, they’ll deliver an extra thrust. You shouldn’t feel any pain, and more often, you’ll feel relief. Don’t be alarmed if you hear a cracking sound similar to when you crack your knuckles.

4. Follow up and Ongoing Treatment

As you reach the end of your appointment, the chiropractor will discuss a treatment plan. Depending on your current condition, you may need multiple treatments to steadily improve. For others, you may only need a one-time adjustment.

The chiropractor will also recommend exercises that you can perform at home. You can also get a list of signs to look out for. These will indicate you’re needing a Y strap adjustment or any other work done.

Try Visiting a Chiropractor

As you can see, visiting a chiropractor isn’t a thing you should dread. Stop the avoidance and consider visiting a chiropractor. With a careful treatment plan in place, they can help you to feel better.
