Three-way battle in Karur constituency in Tamil Nadu’s Lok Sabha elections
Chennai, March 26 (IANS) – The Karur Lok Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu is gearing up for a three-cornered fight with sitting Congress MP S. Jothimani seeking re-election. The AIADMK has fielded L. Thangavel while BJP’s candidate is V.V. Senthilnathan.
In the 2019 general elections, Jothimani trounced senior AIADMK leader M. Thambidurai by a margin of 4,20,546 votes. The Congress-DMK alliance has the upper hand in the constituency, with DMK winning five out of six Assembly constituencies in the area.
Despite being in jail, senior DMK leader and former Minister Senthil Balaji wields considerable influence, further boosting Jothimani’s chances of victory. The AIADMK is banking on support from Muslim voters and the networking abilities of their candidate L. Thangavel to secure a win this election.
Jothimani, confident of retaining her seat, stated, “The Congress party is fighting these elections with the aim of ushering in a secular, democratic government in the country. The people of Karur will re-elect me in 2024.”
The BJP has fielded Karur district president V.V. Senthilnathan from the seat, hoping to make a mark despite the main fight being between Congress and AIADMK. It is the first time since 1996 that BJP has fielded a candidate in Karur, with past attempts yielding limited votes.
Overall, the stage is set for a heated contest in the Karur Lok Sabha constituency, with all three major parties vying for victory in the upcoming elections.
