Is ‘TikTok Graveyard’ the Final Goodbye for Fans After the US Ban?

As the TikTok ban officially takes effect across the US, millions of fans associated with the social media platform are inventing ways to showcase how the app has impacted their lives.

For such fans, a website named ‘tiktokgraveyard.com’ has become a rallying point to muse over and share their digital farewells to the app.

Is ‘TikTok Graveyard’ How Fans Are Saying Goodbye Amid the US Ban?

In a way, ‘tiktokgraveyard.com’ is much akin to Spotify Wrapped but is being used to create a personalized digital tombstone that gives a bird’s eye view of the user’s activities on the app.

Creating a personalized gravestone on TikTok Graveyard is very simple. Users only need to download their data directly from TikTok as a JSON file through the app’s settings.

Once the data is downloaded, the user uploads it to the ‘tiktokgraveyard.com’ website. The website then offers detailed instructions for creating and sharing the personalized tombstone.

The epitaph contains personalized statistics such as the number of hours spent on the app, the number of videos seen, and the user’s friends on the app.

It also gives a gist of the user’s existence on the app, from the date of joining their activities until January 2025.

TikTok is officially offline in the US from January 18, 2025, a full 24 hours before the deadline of January 19, 2025, which was the date set by the US Supreme Court for the app to sell its assets in the US to a US entity.

At 10:30 pm ET, the platform started flashing a message thanking all users for their support and stating that the app was temporarily unavailable. Later, the app disappeared from Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store, making it unavailable to new users.

For the unversed, the ban was enforced due to fears that the app was linked to its parent Chinese company ByteDance, raising concerns about data misuse or surveillance. The parent company is also indicted for its links with the Chinese Army PLA and the Chinese Communist Party.

After several legal challenges, the US Supreme Court upheld the ban in January 2025, leaving TikTok with no other option but to stop its operations in the US.

However, there is a sliver of hope, with President-elect Donald Trump expressing his willingness to find a solution to the issue and also grant a 90-day reprieve to comply with the divestment requirement for ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok.
