Alexander Kristoff timed his dash end to perfection to win the opening stage of the Tour de France in Good.

After a big group crashed inside the ultimate 3km, Norwegian Kristoff, 33, surged house in a dash additionally involving Eire’s Sam Bennett, who was fourth.

Rain made the roads treacherous and led to a number of crashes, with Pavel Sivakov of Group Ineos twice coming off.

Ineos’ defending champion Egan Bernal largely prevented the difficulty and completed safely within the peloton.

On Sunday the riders face a 186km mountainous second stage, with two passages over 1,500m.
