Tripura Tribals’ Traditional Cloth ‘Rignai Pachra’ and Tripureswari Temple’s ‘Pera’ Receive GI Tag

In a proud moment for Tripura, two traditional products, ‘Pera’ and ‘Rignai Pachra’, have been granted the geographical indication (GI) tag by Chief Minister Manik Saha. The ‘Pera’ is a sweet item from the Tripureswari temple, while the ‘Rignai Pachra’ is a traditional attire for tribal women.

Chief Minister Saha expressed his happiness on social media, stating, “I am extremely glad that ‘Pera’ of Tripureswari temple and ‘Rignai Pachra’ have been given the GI tag.” The ‘Pera’ is made of milk and sugar, while the ‘Rignai Pachra’ is a handwoven cloth created by tribal women on their looms in their homes.

The ‘Pera’ has been a traditional offering at the Tripurasundari temple in Tripura’s Gomati district, located 64 km south of Agartala. The temple is over 260 years old and is considered one of the 51 holy sites in India, being the third such temple in eastern India.

On the other hand, the ‘Rignai Pachra’ is a versatile handwoven cloth used by tribal women as both an upper garment, headgear, or a stole. It is also a popular gift given to others as a symbol of love and respect. This recognition with the GI tag highlights the rich cultural heritage of Tripura.
