Tsitsipas secures third Monte-Carlo title with victory against Ruud

Monte-Carlo, April 15 (IANS) Stefanos Tsitsipas clinched his third Monte-Carlo title by defeating Casper Ruud 6-1, 6-4. Tsitsipas became the fifth player in history to win three or more Monte-Carlo titles, joining names like Rafael Nadal and Bjorn Borg.

Tsitsipas expressed his joy by saying, “It has been very difficult, so to be back on the podiums, winning tournaments just feels amazing. The third time is even more special than the first or second time. This is an unbelievable win for me. Capturing that win today was nerve-wracking. I really wanted this trinity. I am extremely happy today.”

The 12th seed saved a break point in the second set and outperformed Ruud, who struggled with consistency in hitting forehand shots. Despite an improved performance in the second set, Ruud was unable to match Tsitsipas’ level of play.

In a tense seventh game lasting 13 minutes, Tsitsipas fought off three break points before securing a crucial break to seal the victory. This win marks Tsitsipas’ 11th tour-level trophy and his return to the Top 10 rankings at World No. 7.

Tsitsipas’ triumph adds to his impressive resume, which includes three Masters 1000 titles. The Greek player’s victory at Monte-Carlo establishes him as a formidable force in the world of tennis, setting the stage for further success in his career.
