Tsunami alert issued as 7.3-magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan
A 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit near Hualien, Taiwan at 7:58 a.m. Wednesday, triggering a tsunami alert. The epicentre was at 23.81 degrees north latitude and 121.74 degrees east longitude, with tremors felt across Taiwan.
The earthquake caused disruptions in Taipei, leading to the suspension of metro services. Taiwan’s meteorological agency reported a 7.2-magnitude quake with aftershocks measuring 6.0 and 5.9 magnitudes. The maximum intensity recorded was 6 magnitude in Hualien County.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the quake occurred at a depth of 15.5 km, south-southeast of the Hualien county government. Two additional quakes were reported within 40 minutes, with nearby epicenters. A red alert for tsunami remains in effect.
