Turncoat MLA switches sides again in Bengal, rejoins BJP from Trinamool

Kolkata, Feb 28 (IANS) BJP legislator from Kaliaganj Assembly constituency in West Bengal, Soumen Roy, returned to the party after leaving Trinamool Congress soon after the 2021 Assembly elections. Roy was welcomed back by Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of opposition in West Bengal Assembly.
Roy claimed that he had joined Trinamool under pressure from the ruling dispensation, but mentally stayed with BJP. He said, “The ruling party leadership was not allowing me to work for the people in my constituency who had elected me. So, I decided to return to the BJP.”
When he joined Trinamool in September 2021, Roy was handed over the party flag by then state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, who is now in judicial custody for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore cash-for-school jobs case in West Bengal.
According to BJP insiders, Roy had expressed his intention to return a couple of months back and has been in regular touch with Adhikari. His return to the BJP marks a significant political development in West Bengal, especially in the lead-up to the upcoming state elections.
Soumen Roy’s re-entry into the saffron camp is expected to impact the political landscape in the state, as his decision highlights the challenges faced by politicians in maintaining their political allegiances amidst changing circumstances.
