In a major respite for former US President Donald Trump, Twitch has lifted its ban, which it had imposed following the events of January 6, 2021. Twitch had suspended Trump’s account indefinitely then.
“We believe there is value in hearing from presidential nominees directly” says anonymous Twitch spokesman on Donald Trump’s unban
A Twitch spokesman, who remained anonymous due to safety considerations, said in a statement,
“We reinstated former President Trump’s Twitch channel. We believe there is value in hearing from presidential nominees directly, when possible. Trump is now the official Republican nominee for US president.”
Trump had accepted the GOP nomination for president on Thursday night.
The spokesman added,
“We continue to enforce our Community Guidelines and take necessary enforcement action when we identify violations of our rules. Twitch doesn’t have a ‘public figure policy,’ meaning all channels are equally subject to our guidelines, regardless of whether the channel belongs to a public figure.”
On June 29, 2020, Twitch temporarily banned Donald Trump’s Twitch account over hateful conduct.
After the attack on Capitol Hill, Twitch suspended Trump’s account indefinitely on January 20, 2021, citing the risk of further incitement of violence.
The move by Twitch follows actions by Meta, which also lifted the restrictions it had enforced on Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. It had reinstated these accounts in January 2023.
Twitch is the streaming platform owned by Amazon.
