UDID Program: Objectives, Benefits, Need and More Details

UDID Program: The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities has mandated that all states and UTs in the country issue disability certificates to qualified people only through the online form via the UDID portal starting in June 2021.

The UDID Project was initiated in 2016 by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment’s Dept of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

UDID Program Objectives

1. The project’s main goal is to build a complete list of people with disabilities (PwD) and to issue them with a Disability Identity Card.
2. The UDID initiative will also aid in streamlining the routing of recipients’ physical and financial success at all levels of the implementation hierarchy, including the village, block, district, state, and national levels.
3. The goal is to create a comprehensive and integrated system for issuing ID cards to PwDs that incorporates both their identity and disability information.

UDID Program’s Benefits

1. A reader will be able to capture all of the relevant information about PwDs on the handicap card. This will eliminate the need for PwDs to duplicate their documentation and papers, making it simpler for them to receive benefits that are owed to them.
2. In the future, the UDID card would be the only proof of identity and verification for disabled people seeking various benefits.
3. This will make it easier for numerous agencies at the state, district, national, and village levels to follow the beneficiaries’ physical and financial growth.

UDID Program’s Need

According to the 2011 Census, India’s population of Persons with Disabilities is 2.68 crore or little more than 2% of the overall population. There is no data on PwDs providing personal information, disability-specific information, district-specific information, education and employment information, and so on.

On the grounds of the impairment certificate issued to them, disabled people can obtain government help and benefits. Only roughly half of the PwDs received certificates from the states/UTs so far. The number of identified disabilities has also expanded from 7 to 21 since the passage of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016.
