UN to hold World Social Summit in 2025

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution to convene the World Social Summit in 2025. The summit aims to address gaps and recommit to the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and the Program of Action, giving momentum to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, as per Xinhua news agency.

The resolution requests the UN General Assembly president to appoint two co-facilitators from developing and developed countries to lead the intergovernmental preparatory process. The outcome should be a short political declaration adopted by consensus. The UN secretary-general is also asked to provide support to the preparatory process.

The World Social Summit in 2025 aims to focus on social development and the 2030 Agenda. It seeks to strengthen the commitment to the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and the Program of Action while addressing the gaps in implementation. With the adoption of this resolution, the preparation for the summit will now begin with the appointment of co-facilitators.
