Under MCC watch in J&K, Political Campaigns Resorting to Provoking Separatist Sentiments

The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) set for the Lok Sabha elections in J&K is stringent and leaves no room for violation. The days of using semi-separatist sentiments in election campaigns are over, as the Election Commission is ready to penalize offenders.
In the past, some political parties in Kashmir used green color, rock salt, and semi-separatist sentiments to appeal to voters. However, the MCC now strictly prohibits such tactics. Candidates and parties must adhere to the set boundaries to avoid facing penalties.
Decency, decent language, and behavior are believed to attract voters, rather than violating the MCC. The Election Commission has the authority to take strict actions against any candidate or party that crosses the ‘Lakshman Rekha’ set by the commission.
While fact-based criticism of rival parties is allowed, criticism of constitutional institutions like the President, Supreme Court, and High Courts is prohibited. The MCC aims to prevent actions that incite hatred, violence, character assassination, and religious tensions during the electoral campaign.
The Election Commission has deployed a comprehensive surveillance system to monitor election activities and prevent violations of the MCC. From Static Surveillance Teams to Video Surveillance Teams, the district administration is fully prepared to ensure a fair and lawful electoral process in J&K.
