Universal Children’s Day is celebrated every year on November 20. It is a special day dedicated by the United Nations to spread global awareness of children’s rights and better the well-being of children. In this light, the day makes society aware of children’s difficulties and their rights and strives to ensure a better future for them. The day started in 1954 and is being celebrated all around the world for promoting the welfare of the children.

The United Nations established Universal Children’s Day in 1954 as an encouragement of international harmony and consciousness for children. Yet, work for children’s rights started long before this date. It was the year 1857 when Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard of Chelsea, Massachusetts led a special service. This was then to be known as “Rose Day” or “Flower Sunday”; but soon it was to become “Children’s Day.”.

It was declared a national holiday in Turkey in 1920, admitting the children’s rights. After that, in 1929, Turkey’s President Mustafa Kemal Atürk decided it should be turned into a national day to be formally celebrated.

In 1959, the United Nations General Assembly accepted the “Declaration of the Rights of the Child,” which the League of Nations agreed upon in 1924. This declaration emphasizes the need for the protection of children’s bodies and minds, making them capable of proper development. Additionally, it ensures that children are provided with a safe environment for a healthy life based on their rights.

In 1989, the United Nations adopted the “Convention on the Rights of the Child” or simply CRC. This instrument points out the civil, political, economic, social, health, and cultural rights of children. According to this convention, all countries should work in the best interest of their children and respect their rights.

Universal Children’s Day is concerned with enlightening people about children’s rights and enhancing their welfare. The simple need to observe this day is to increase unity among children, respect for children’s rights, and better quality life. The date emphasizes the hard situations that children face across the world, such as child labor and war, discrimination, and malnutrition.

The purpose of this day is to raise children’s health, education, and safety and that each child can get equal opportunities.
