Universities can lead to freedom and sustainability: Subhas Sarkar at 4th World Universities Summit organised by JGU

The 4th edition of the World Universities Summit-2024 (WUS) was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar at O.P. Jindal Global University in Sonipat. The summit is organized by the International Institute for Higher Education Research and Capacity Building (IIHEd) and will be held for three days from February 19 to 21. The theme of the summit is ‘Universities of the Future: A Global Partnership for Social Justice and Sustainable Development’.

The summit will feature 25 thematic sessions hosted virtually for the first two days with 120+ education leaders from 20 countries, 6 continents, and 100+ leading universities from across the world. On the third day, a physical “Higher Education Leaders’ Conclave” will be organized on JGU’s campus with participation from Vice Chancellors, Deans, senior leadership, and faculty from several Indian universities.

During the inaugural session, Subhas Sarkar emphasized the need to reimagine the Universities of the future for social responsibility, community engagement, and sustainable development. He also urged the audience to reflect on the crucial role that Universities play in shaping the direction of any nation.

The summit also featured Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, the Founding Vice-Chancellor of O.P. Jindal Global University, who welcomed the diverse audience and highlighted the role of universities in achieving the “Viksit Bharat” goals for the betterment of youth. The Guests of Honour at the inaugural session were Professor (Dr.) Pankaj Mittal, Professor (Dr.) Virander S. Chauhan, and Dr. Ashwin Fernandes, who emphasized the role of universities in promoting sustainable development goals and the future of work.

The summit will conclude on February 21 with an on-site Higher Education Leaders’ Conclave, which will feature a keynote address by Professor (Dr.) Philip Altbach and special addresses by Professor (Dr.) Shailendra Raj Mehta and Professor (Dr.) Bhushan Patwardhan.

The World Universities Summit aims to address the future role of universities in promoting social justice, sustainable development, and the changing landscape of higher education in the twenty-first century.
