UNSC raises ‘deep concern’ over deaths of Gaza food convoy, implicates Israeli forces in incident

United Nations expresses deep concern over Gaza deaths

United Nations Security Council expresses “deep concern” over more than 100 deaths in Gaza involving Israeli defence forces. The statement highlights the importance of complying with international law, including humanitarian and human rights laws. The Council calls for an immediate, safe delivery of humanitarian aid in Gaza.

The Council, under the presidency of Japan’s Permanent Representative Yamazaki Kazuyuki, has issued a consensus statement regarding the incident in Gaza. While the statement does not have the power of a binding resolution, it reflects the sentiment of the members who are concerned about the situation.

According to the statement, observations by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs support reports that individuals were shot by Israeli forces at a humanitarian assistance convoy southwest of Gaza City. The Council Members express deep concern over the loss of lives and injuries in the incident.

The US administration, under President Joe Biden, is facing pressure to address the situation in Gaza. Despite previous opposition to critical resolutions on Israel, the US is now supporting efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Council is expected to discuss the Gaza situation further in an upcoming meeting.
