US-India aviation partnership aims to protect an open and free Indo-Pacific: US ambassador

US Ambassador Eric Garcetti recently met Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia to discuss the upcoming US-India Aviation Summit in Washington. The summit aims to strengthen the aviation partnership between the two countries, creating jobs and ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific.

During the meeting, Minister Scindia and Ambassador Garcetti discussed collaboration in the aviation and steel sectors, as well as the seventh US-India Aviation Summit scheduled for June 24-26 in Washington. The Summit will foster dialogue between Indian and US aviation authorities and industry, showcasing advanced US technology and best practices tailored for India’s expansion requirements.

India’s civil aviation industry has experienced significant growth in recent years, with plans to invest $12 billion in constructing new airports and upgrading existing ones. The market witnessed a 24% increase in passengers from January-October 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. Boeing projects India’s aviation market will grow 6.9% annually until 2040, surpassing other high-growth regions.

According to Airbus analysis, India may require nearly 2,210 new aircraft and around 430 million additional passenger flights over the next 20 years to meet growing air traffic demand. The US-India Aviation Cooperation Program, led by the US Trade and Development Agency, aims to facilitate collaboration and investment in the aviation sector, contributing to job creation and regional connectivity.

The sixth US-India Aviation Summit held in Mumbai in 2018 was a success, focusing on enhancing cooperation and fostering growth within the aviation industry. The upcoming summit in Washington aims to build on this momentum, strengthening ties between Indian and US aviation stakeholders for mutual benefit and progress in the sector.
