History and legends around Valentine’s day
Well, the origin of the day goes back to a roman festival of fertility ‘Lupercalia’. People started celebrating the day as a way to add some twist to the Lupercalia festival by the church officials. Back in the old times, the festival was associated with the God of agriculture Faunus, Romulus, and Remus, the founders of Rome. The festivities include boys and girls being paired based on the lottery system and most of the time pairs used to end up getting married to each other.
By the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I made the Lupercalia celebrations a part of Saint Valentine’s celebrations.
