Katha of Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat
Long ago, a king named Mandhata ruled in a kingdom. He is said to have believed in King Dan-saint and was extremely ascetic. Raja Mandhata was a very majestic and eminent king. One day he went to the forest and started doing penance there. While doing penance, a bear came from the forest and started eating the feet of King Mandhata.
King Mandhata was so absorbed in penance that he did not say anything to the bear nor drove him away. When King Mandhata started suffering, he started remembering Lord Vishnu. At the call of the king, Lord Vishnu appeared and saved the life of the king. When King Mandhata saw his feet, he was very sad.
King Mandhata got freedom from such sins
Seeing the indifference of King Mandhata, Lord Vishnu said that this is the result of sins committed in your previous birth. With this, Lord Vishnu told King Mandhata the way to heal his feet.
Lord Vishnu said that you have to go to Mathura and fast on Varuthini Ekadashi. By obeying Lord Vishnu, King Mandhata did exactly that and as a result of the Vrat, all the sins of King Mandhata were erased and his leg was healed.
