Veterans Day is celebrated every year on 11 November. It was issued by President Woodrow Wilson on November 11, 1919, a year after the end of World War I. Armistice Day was intended to pay tribute to the martyrs of World War II for their sacrifices. Seven years later, in 1926, Congress passed a resolution calling on President Calvin Klein to issue an annual proclamation on November 11, making Armistice Day a legal holiday. United States Senate Resolution 143, passed on August 4, 2001, designated the week from November 11 to November 17, 2001, as National Veterans Awareness Week. The resolution called for linking the educational efforts of primary and secondary school students with the services and sacrifices of ex-servicemen. State and local governments, schools, and non-governmental businesses are not required to close and can decide whether to remain open or closed on Veterans Day.
