Veterans Day is officially here, it is a public holiday celebrated in the United States of America. Earlier it was known as Armistice Day, observed to acknowledge the veterans, men and women who served in the armed forces of America. Many confuse it with Memorial Day but in this, we only pay tribute to those who lost their lives while serving their home country.

The festival was first celebrated by Raymond Weeks in Alabama in 1945.

When is Veterans Day celebrated?

Veterans Day is observed on 11th November every year.

Who started Veterans Day?

Initially, it was celebrated as Armistice Day by US President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. It was established at the end of the First World War in order to pay homage to those who lost their lives while fighting for our country. The day is celebrated to recognize their sacrifices and bravery. After 7 years,  the US Congress made a resolution and sent a proposal to President Calvin Coolidge to make Armistice a national holiday.

Although after the Second World War, veteran Raymond Weeks initiated the idea that Armistice Day must recognize all veterans instead of those who died while serving on duty. On 11th November, Weeks celebrated the first Veterans Day in Alabama and continued to do till his departure in 1985. He was also awarded the Presidential Citizenship Medal by President Ronald Reagan in 1982.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower on May 26th 1954 signed a proposal to make Armistice Day into Veterans Day. Since then the festival is observed on November 11, 1954.

In other countries like France, Australia, Britain, and Canada, 11th November is celebrated to honor the al the martyrs of World Wars I and II.
