Veterans Day is one of the significant American holidays celebrated to honor all soldiers who served in the United States military, the history behind it stretches back to World War I, as the treaty signed was on June 28, 1919, after the Treaty of Versailles. The armistice, however, was November 11, 1918 between the Allies and Germany, and this day was chosen for special recognition.
The day was first termed as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, as President Woodrow Wilson pronounced it the time to look back and consider the actions of the soldiers and also the gratification of the nation towards the same. In America, the Department of Veterans Affairs had planned its celebration with parades and public forums and even all the businessmen would close their shops on this very day every year for a little period of time.
In 1926, the U.S. Congress designated November 11 to be the end of World War I; it was declared a legal holiday in 1938 to commemorate the veterans of World War I. After American involvement in World War II and the Korean War, in 1954 it was altered to be named Veterans Day to honor those veterans serving in all wars.
However, the date of Veterans Day had been moved to the last Monday in November in 1968 under the Uniform Holiday Act to create a three-day weekend during that month. But it was opposed and not accepted by many states and veterans organizations and this led to confusion over the date of the holiday, since it was reverted back to the original date.
There are confusions between Veterans Day and Memorial Day, as both honor US military service; however, Memorial Day is when it specifies soldiers who have died in the act of serving for their country, and it’s celebrated on the last Monday of May. Meanwhile, Veterans Day is honored to all those soldiers who have actively served, be it alive or dead, and whether during wartime or peacetime.
To celebrate this day, the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act was signed in 2016 by President Barack Obama. It establishes the day through two minutes of silence at 2:11 p.m.
