Veterans Day US 2021 History and Significance
Veterans Day was first observed on November 11, 1919, by President Woodrow Wilson. He celebrated Veterans Day to honour the soldier’s sacrifice and bravery in World War i. But in 1926, American Congress passed a resolution to issue annual proclamations on November 11 and it gave legal status to Veterans Day.
In 1945 after World War II veteran Raymond Weeks thought to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans apart from World War I. He organized the first Veterans Day celebration in 1945 in Alabama until he died in 1985. He is also known as the ‘Father of Veterans Day’, and this title was given to him by Elizabeth Dole.
In 1954, Ed Rees, the U.S. Representative from Emporia, presented a bill to establish the holiday to Congress. The then-president Eisenhower, also from Kansas, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954. The 83rd U.S. Congress amended the Act of 1938 by deleting the words like ‘Armistice’ and inserting the word ‘Veterans.’ From June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
In 1954 The National Veterans Award was also created. It was first received by Congressman Rees for his support in making Veterans Day a federal holiday.
