Chad Irish Detained by Police After Discovery of Yazmeen Williams’ Body in a Sleeping Bag

Chad Irish, the man detained by the police, has been charged with concealment of a corpse, criminal possession of a weapon, and menacing.

Police said that Irish had threatened a 47-year-old man who identified him at the Strauss Houses on East 28th Street, where Williams’ body was found. The police are still searching for the murder weapon. Police are executing a search warrant at Irish’s residence, where they believe Williams was killed.

Williams often used to stay at Irish’s place occasionally, but their relationship is unclear. Interestingly, Irish is described as ambulatory and capable of carrying out murder but still uses a mechanized wheelchair to move around.

Irish has a long criminal record with 21 prior arrests in a record that goes back to the early ’90s and has been in and out of state prison. He was out on parole in connection with a July 2022 robbery in the Bronx.

The Kips Bay community where Williams’ body was found is outraged. A large crowd had gathered outside Irish’s house when he was taken into custody and was carried on a stretcher. It was with difficulty that the police safely took away the suspect.

An angry crowd was yelling “murderer” and throwing punches at him, still unable to comprehend why someone would kill a girl who had grown up in the neighborhood.

Neighbor Ted Oehmke said,

“Enough people around here were saying that they knew exactly who did it. I think that they probably already didn’t like him before and seeing that he did that to this girl, they are understandably enraged, and I don’t blame them.”

Detectives have studied the CCTV video footage where a man in a motorized wheelchair was seen dragging and leaving the body on East 27th Street Friday, using a dolly to wheel it. Detectives believe Irish was the man in the motorized wheelchair.

Senator Kristen Gonzalez, Assemblymember Harvey Epstein, and Councilmember Carlina Rivera in a statement said that they are outraged and grieving,

“Our hearts go out to Yazmeen Williams’s family, particularly her mother, Nicole Williams, who has shown immense strength during this unimaginably difficult time. Yazmeen Williams was a bright and accomplished individual, a graduate of Buffalo State University with a degree in criminal justice, and Yazmeen Williams had just begun a promising career with the New York City Housing Authority. The loss of someone so deeply committed to the wellbeing of her neighbors is immeasurable. This tragedy has left a void in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.”
