The occupants of the pickup truck initially try to evade Dasaur’s punch. Dasaur continues to berate the driver, threatening him with his gun. A few seconds later, the driver of the pickup truck draws their own gun and fires multiple shots at Gavin Dasaur, who collapses to the ground.
The seven-second video ends when the person who was filming the incident takes cover in his car amidst the melee.
As per the details furnished by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), the shooting occurred at around 8:15 p.m. near the intersection of South Emerson Avenue and Thompson Road.
The driver of the pickup truck was detained but later released when it became clear that he had acted in self-defense.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) stated that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged road rage incident is ongoing. The police are gathering evidence and witness statements to ascertain the full details of the tragic event.
Gavin Dasaur’s wife has expressed sorrow at the tragic turn of events that led to the death of her husband.
In a statement to a media house, she said,
“He was a hardworking man who always went out of his way to help anyone and wanted to give the world to me and his family. He did not deserve to die this way. It’s such a tragedy that my husband was murdered in cold blood.”
Attorney John Tompkins said,
“The law says you can use reasonable force when you reasonably believe it’s necessary to prevent serious bodily harm to yourself or another.”
Indiana lawmakers have amended the state’s self-defence code as of July 1, this year. However, it is not clear if it had any bearing on this case.
