Vinesh Phogat, a well-known and very talented wrestler who is representing India in the Olympics 2024 event. However, Vinesh faced a very tough situation this year, which left the fans heartbroken for her. Vinesh was supposed to weigh in before she went in for her match; however, she got disqualified because she did not meet the weight limit required for the event.
Vinesh Phogat Disqualified From the Paris Olympics Final
Wrestlers are supposed to stay within the limit to compete in their category. Vinesh was supposed to weigh 50 kg or less for the match. Right before the event, Vinesh Phogat weighed in and was a few grams over the limit around 100 grams overweight.
The night before, Vinesh was roughly 2 kg over the limit. Throughout the night, Vinesh went through cardio exercises to lose the excess weight. Vinesh was, in fact, dehydrated and had to visit the hospital to feel better.
Vinesh has proven herself to stay within the weight limit before as well. She usually competes in the 53 kg category, but during the Olympic qualifiers, she also faced issues staying within the 50 kg limit.
Despite these challenges, she managed to cut the 50 kg category.
The Indian team asked for more time for Vinesh, but they did not grant any additional time. As a result, Vinesh was not allowed to compete for any medals, including silver. Vinesh is the first female wrestler from India to reach the Olympic final level, which is a huge achievement, because of the immense pride she brought to the country.
The committee stated,
“Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand.”
