Vodafone and Nokia collaborate on new technology to eliminate gaming and video lag
Vodafone and Nokia successfully tested a new internet technology that reduces latency for customers, especially during gaming or video calls. Using a replica fibre-to-the-home link, the companies reduced response times from 550 milliseconds to just 12 milliseconds over Wi-Fi. Latency dropped to 1.05 milliseconds with an ethernet cable.
The test showcased the benefits of the new Internet standard ‘L4S’ to maintain high data throughput and low latency simultaneously. Vodafone’s Gavin Young expressed excitement about the technology’s potential to deliver a more interactive internet experience. L4S, meaning ‘Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable’ throughput, is supported by the Internet Engineering Task Force to tackle queuing delays.
Nokia Bell Labs’ Azimeh Sefidcon noted that L4S will enable real-time applications like videoconferencing and cloud-gaming to run seamlessly without significant queuing delays. The technology shows promise in enhancing internet experiences, particularly for users engaging in demanding activities such as gaming or remote operations.
