Vodafone Idea continues to lose subscribers in Indian market: TRAI data

In the latest report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Vodafone Idea has continued to experience a decline in subscribers in the Indian market. The data shows that both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel gained subscribers in December 2023, further solidifying their positions in the industry.

Vodafone Idea saw a loss of 13.68 lakh wireless subscribers in December, marking an increase from the 10.73 lakh subscribers lost in November. On the other hand, Reliance Jio added 39.94 lakh net wireless subscribers, an uptick from the 34.47 lakh added in November. Bharti Airtel also managed to increase its subscriber base by 18.5 lakh, slightly higher than the previous month.

The TRAI data indicates that there was a 35.78 per cent increase in combined mobile connection additions from November to December, reaching a total of 43.22 lakh new subscribers. However, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd experienced a loss of 1.5 lakh wireless subscribers in December, showing an 84 per cent decrease from the previous month.

In terms of active subscriber tally, Bharti Airtel leads the way with over 98.9 per cent of active subscribers. Meanwhile, Jio’s active subscribers fell to 92.32 per cent in December, down from 93.87 per cent in the previous month, according to the TRAI data.

The report highlights the ongoing competition and shifting dynamics within the Indian telecom industry, with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel making gains at the expense of Vodafone Idea.
