Voting concludes in Iran’s Parliament and Assembly of Experts elections after 16 hours

Voting for Iran’s 12th Parliament and sixth Assembly of Experts ended after 16 hours, with more than 15,000 candidates competing for 290 parliamentary seats and 144 candidates vying for Assembly of Experts positions. A total of 61.17 million people were eligible to vote in the elections, which saw multiple extensions in the voting period.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi cast their votes early in the process, emphasizing the importance of the election in shaping Iran’s future. Both leaders highlighted the global scrutiny on the elections, urging the Iranian people to participate and make their voices heard.

Iran’s Police Chief Ahmad Reza Radan confirmed that no security issues occurred at polling stations across the country, ensuring full security during the voting process. Iran’s Constitutional Council spokesman Hadi Tahan Nazif stated that the turnout would be announced after the closing of the voting process, with 230,000 monitors overseeing polling stations.

The previous election turnout for the Iranian Parliament in 2020 was reported at 42 per cent, indicating the importance of citizen participation in shaping Iran’s political landscape. The final turnout for the latest elections will be revealed after the voting process concludes, providing insights into the engagement of the Iranian electorate in the democratic process.
