A surveillance video, which has since gone viral, shows a Michigan middle school coach allegedly choking a student with a shirt, drawing widespread condemnation and concern among worried parents. The coach has since been removed from his position and has now been charged for his despicable actions.
The parents of the teen, who was the victim of the coach’s actions, are calling for strict actions against the erring coach. The alleged assault happened on June 4, and the teen was a student at Ypsilanti Middle School, according to information provided by the family’s attorney, Jordan Vahdat. The school authorities have since relieved the coach from his post, and he no longer serves in the school.

The video shows the coach approaching the student, identified as Michael Moon, and pulling his shirt over the head of the student. A brief struggle ensues, and the student finally breaks free and walks away. The incident captured in the video lasted fewer than 20 seconds.
The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office said that they have instituted two charges against the coach:
- Assault with intent to do great bodily harm by strangulation,
- Assault and battery, a misdemeanor.
No further details have been furnished by the office.
The coach has been dismissed from service, and he is forbidden to enter the school property or take part in any school events, as per the details released by Ypsilanti Community Schools Superintendent Alena Zachery-Ross.
Zachery-Ross said in a statement, “Our district is dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment for all students. The actions of the employee are unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our district. We will continue implementing and enforcing policies that protect our students and ensure their well-being.”
Michael’s parents, upon being aware of the incident, reported it to the police who showed them the surveillance footage of the incident. Michael’s mother said to a media outlet that she was horrified at seeing the video and also made her lose her faith in the coach since her ward looked up to him.
It was revealed that the coach, who also doubled as a hall monitor, had asked Moon to do pushups as a punishment for horsing around in the hallway, but the teen declined since his hand was hurt.
