What Happened To Instagram? Users Globally Bombarded with Sensitive & NSFW Content Amid Alleged Algorithm Glitch!

Instagram users across the globe have been exasperated after finding their feeds being inundated by sensitive and NSFW content.

Users have stated that despite employing the Sensitive Content Control, they are forced to view disturbing and often violent and gory videos. This has led to many users to wonder if there is a bug or a change in Instagram’s algorithm.

Meta, which owns Instagram, has still not reacted to these complaints.

Many experts are contending that there could be an anomaly in the content moderation system or an unintended algorithm change could be to blame. Experts also hinted at the possibility of a recent algorithm update which erroneously prioritized violent or sensitive posts leading to a spurt in such contents in the users’ feeds.

Instagram users have reported on social media platforms like X that gory and violent videos, including footage of flights and censored bodycam footage of shootings, frequently being seen in Instagram Reels.

One infuriated user posted,

“Anyone else noticing this on Instagram? In the past few hours, my IG Reels feed has suddenly started showing violent or disturbing videos out of nowhere. Feels random. Is anyone else experiencing this? Or is it just me? Wondering if it’s a glitch or some weird algorithm change.”

A second user wrote,

“What is happening to Instagram?? All I see is sensitive and violent content every few scrolls????”

Another user angrily retorted,

“Is it just me or is Instagram Reels violent as f–k right now?? I am only getting fight videos and couples cheating on each other.”

The happenings have ignited a huge backlash on social media with many users venting their frustration and anger. Users are demanding answers from Meta and parents are also worried if their kids are exposed to such violent content. Many parents are contemplating removing the Instagram app from their children’s smartphones.

According to media house Vocal Media, Instagram artificial Intelligence scans and removes sensitive material and restricts their visibility, and any glitch could lead it not being able to filter inappropriate content.

Instagram has in the past also come under intense scrutiny over its content moderation. Investigation by Media House, The Wall Street Journal in the past revealed that Reels algorithm was erroneously recommending adult restricted videos to users following teen influencers, cheerleaders, and other young content creators. The report also indicated the platform of serving a mix of adult and child sexualizing contents.
