WhatsApp bans over 67 lakh suspicious accounts in India in January
New Delhi, March 2 (IANS) Meta-owned WhatsApp has announced that they banned over 67 lakh bad accounts in India in January, in accordance with the new IT Rules 2021. The company banned a total of 6,728,000 accounts, with 1,358,000 being proactively banned. The platform received 14,828 complaint reports and took action on 10 of them.
The popular messaging platform, with over 500 million users in India, has been actively working towards maintaining user safety on their platform. The company’s monthly compliance report revealed that they have been taking preventive actions to combat abuse on the platform.
In response to empowering Indian social media users, the Central government has launched the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) to address concerns regarding content and other issues. This move aims to strengthen digital laws and regulate Big Tech companies in the country.
WhatsApp stated, “We are an industry leader among end-to-end encrypted messaging services in preventing and combating abuse.” The platform employs a dedicated team to oversee efforts in ensuring user safety, including engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and experts in law enforcement.
In December last year, WhatsApp had also banned more than 69 lakh bad accounts in India, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining a safe and secure online environment for users. The company continues to work towards improving user safety and combating abuse on their platform.
