Who Is Yaser Jabbar? Ex-GOSH Doctor Indicted  Of Performing ‘Unwanted’ Surgeries On Children

GOSH, or Great Ormond Street Hospital, is one of the leading children’s hospitals in the world, and it has been in the news recently after it ordered an urgent review of more than 700 patients treated by one of its former surgeons, Yaser Jabbar.

Investigations revealed that 22 children in 39 cases reviewed had some degree of harm, and the hospital is taking the concerns very seriously.

Who Is Yaser Jabbar?

Yaser Jabbar is a former orthopedic surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London and has been indicted for conducting unnecessary and inappropriate leg surgery procedures, which led to serious harm to several children.

The review of 721 cases revealed that 13 children suffered varying degrees of permanent damage, with one case even leading to amputation. Yaser Jabbar is reported to be practicing in Dubai.

The review, which was conducted by an independent agency, revealed that out of 39 cases, 13 children suffered “severe damage,” nine had to endure low or moderate damage, and two cases have been sent for further peer review. Fifteen patients did not suffer any harm.

Great Ormond Street Hospital issued an apology.

A spokesperson for GOSH said in a statement:

“In 2022, we asked the Royal College of Surgeons to review our pediatric orthopedic service after concerns were raised by a number of our patient families and staff. As part of this, we are carrying out a review into the care of some of our patients. We have written directly to all patients and their families whose care is being reviewed, so please be assured you would have been contacted if we are looking at your care. The surgeon who is the main focus in the media coverage has not worked at GOSH since 2022. Our priority is ensuring that all patients have their care reviewed thoroughly, and we are working through the group of patients to understand any issues with their care.

This is a complex task and is taking some time. If, when reviewing a patient’s care, we find instances of harm, we will contact patients and families again to determine the next steps for them. We are committed to learning from every single patient that we treat and to being open and transparent with our families when care falls below the high standards we strive for. Inviting external reviews into our services helps us to identify any changes that need to be made to ensure we are delivering the very best care for our patients.”

Yaser Jabbar graduated from St. George’s Hospital Medical School in London and had worked at GOSH hospital’s lower limb reconstruction service until 2022.

He stepped down from his position only last September following an 11-month fully paid stint.

The Daily Mail Online has reported that Yaser Jabbar, 43, is still practising on children and is often seen at top conferences in Dubai. He regularly speaks about his surgical skills and continues to operate on children at the Clemenceau Medical Center and at hospitals for orthopedic specialists, Orthocure.

Despite a slew of complaints, he continues to practice with no interruptions in Dubai. Yaser Jabbar is also scheduled to speak at a Dubai medical conference, the MENA International Orthopaedics Congress.
