The origin of “Womp Womp” has its connection with the early 1900s or late 1800s with vaudeville shows. Thus, the probable birthplace of the trending expression can be traced back to a venture or more, which now is used heavily to express disappointment like a similar term “Moye Moye” that also went viral recently.

Vaudeville shows were live theatrical performances that were exclusive to the United States in the late 1900s. Thus, this expression gained traction when it was associated with the phrase first. In 2005 October an entry at Urban Dictionary also showed the linkage between the vaudeville era and “Womp Womp”. The link was established by Reverend Dr. Mycopheles.

In May 2010, Josh Streeter, a famous YouTuber posted a video portraying the Sad Trombone audio. The video went viral in no time sparking discussions on sound’s origin and garnered more than 1.5 million views.

During a discussion about US-Mexico border issues at Fox News in June 2018, Corey Lewandowski, the former President Donald Trump’s ex-campaign official, responded to a story with “Womp Womp.” The story was about a 10-year-old girl who got separated and was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. His response was the origin of controversy as numerous people found it lacking empathy and insensitive.

The expression “Womp Womp” took an unexpected turn when Shane Ryan Sealy yelled “womp, womp” at an immigration rally in Huntsville, Alabama while brandishing a gun. He yelled by giving reference to a controversial statement by Corey Lewandowski.
