The construction workers discovered the grenade at about 12:10 p.m. and alerted the airport authorities who immediately contacted the Harbor Police officers who arrived with K-9 units to investigate. The San Diego Fire-Rescue’s Metro-Arson Strike Team was also called in and they took the grenade into their custody.
The construction area was sealed but operations in the rest of the airport continued as usual. Authorities stated that only one traffic lane to Terminal 1 was affected. It is not clear how the grenade came into the airport.
According to the airport Officials, San Diego airport was operated by the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and there was a runway which was used by the long range bombers of that period. No wonder the airport was jet ready in the World War II era but the first commercial jet operations started in 1960 when United Airlines became the first airline to offer pure jet service.
