World AIDS Day 2024 Theme, Quotes, Images, Messages, Slogans and Captions

On December 1 of every year, World AIDS Day is held to promote awareness of HIV/AIDS, to show support for people suffering from the disease, and to commemorate the people who have died due to AIDS or AIDS-related illnesses. It is a call to action by individuals, communities, and governments to do something about HIV/AIDS. The primary aim of this day is to instill education, the importance of testing, and to reduce stigma about HIV infection.

In 2024, WHO would mark its World AIDS Day themed “Act on your rights: My health, my right!” and was appealing to world leaders and citizens to raise their voice for the right to health as it continues to eliminate inequalities faced in the fight for the end of AIDS.

As World AIDS Day, the awareness-raising purpose is to remind people of this scourge as, although great strides have been made in the prevention, treatment, and care of this disease, it remains a major public health challenge, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. The day will try to keep stressing education, access to lifesaving medicines, and eliminating stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV. It reminds us that a collective effort is needed to achieve the goal of zero new infections and discrimination.

It begins in 1988 when it was founded by two public information officers from the WHO Global Programme on AIDS: James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter. They aimed to generate more media attention and bring people’s awareness to HIV/AIDS. December 1 was chosen as it was a proper time after the US elections and before the holiday season.

HIV infection is a disease that has no cure as of now, but can certainly be controlled if the proper education is given, especially in rural areas. There was a time when the disease was considered an incurable health problem, but with improvements in HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care, people living with HIV can have a long and healthy life. In India, 58.96 thousand AIDS-related deaths and 69.22 thousand new HIV infections were reported in 2019.

In 2021, an estimated 14.6 lakh persons were infected with HIV, of whom 13 lakh were adults and 1.6 lakh children. It is a fatal disease, killing an estimated 6.5 lakh HIV patients. An estimated 3.84 crore people worldwide are found to be HIV infected, of whom 54% are women and girls. Most of the affected people live in low-income and middle-income countries.
