World Braille Day is observed on 4 January every year. It is the birth anniversary of Louis Braille. The man behind the invention of the braille system of writing and reading was adopted by the visually impaired population across the globe.
The day was recognized by UNESCO as World Braille Day. It is observed to promote and raise awareness regarding braille as a language to bring inclusion in the field of education as well as in the daily lives of blind people.
On this day, people recognize the efforts of Louis Braille as his invention made the visually impaired accessible and able to communicate with the rest of the world. Every year, a new theme is announced to raise awareness about the causes more effectively.
This year i.e. 2024 the theme is- “Empowering Through Inclusion and Diversity.” Making a commitment to make the world more inclusive towards the visually impaired population. Not only recognize them but also include them in every part of the society. It focuses more on changing society and adding diversity to the visually impaired community. It urges the public to advocate to promote inclusivity in the world that will help people with disabilities thrive. A place where disability looked like your power.
The traces of World Braille Day go back to November 2018 when the UN recognized 4 January as Braille Day. Born in 1809 in Coupvray, France. Louis merely at the age of 3, injured his eye with an awl. The accident infected his eye and later spread to the other eye. Gradually, he was blind with no vision in both of his eyes.
