In the year 2021, the General Assembly of the United Nations formally decided to commemorate it on 7 October every year.

The highest percentage of cotton is produced in India. It contributes about 25% to the global production of cotton. Cotton crop is grown in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. Cotton cultivation has been a major source of income for farmers and laborers and plays an important role in the economic condition of the country.
