The day held special significance in 2005 as Pope John Paul II died on 2 April that year. While he was on his deathbed, a large crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Rome, to pray for him. In 2013, the day was again marked as historic when Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation due to poor health.

World Patient Day is observed on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, a Catholic title for the Virgin Mary. In 1858, a young girl named Saint Bernadette Soubirous experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes, France.
