Every year on 28 July globally, World Hepatitis Day is commemorated. World Hepatitis Day is also known as World Liver Day. This day is commemorated to spread awareness of the various health hazards that are associated with hepatitis. Today is regarded as an ideal day to put efforts to know various ways of elimination of viral hepatitis. Moreover, the people who need these treatment and testing procedures should be informed urgently.

As per the reports, one person dies every 30 seconds due to an illness related to hepatitis. As per the data released by World Health Organisation, only around 22% of the people infected with chronic infection of hepatitis B receive treatment and only 10% of these people are diagnosed. It is also noted that only 42% of babies receive the birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine across the world.

Thousands and millions are people in this world are unaware of the fact that they might have viral hepatitis disease. A million lives will be lost or millions of people will continue to suffer if the disease will remain undiagnosed. Hepatitis is one of those diseases, that affect people in a variety of ways, yet remain undiagnosed.

The theme for the 2023, World Hepatitis Day has been set as, “One Life, One Liver”.

History

World Health Organisation rolled out a global health campaign with the view to making this world Hepatitis free, it spread world-level awareness campaign. In 2007, the establishment of the World Hepatitis Alliance occurred. Hepatitis Day was commemorated in 2007 for the first time by the community.

In May 2010, the very first resolution on viral hepatitis was adopted. 28 July was chosen to be commemorated as World Hepatitis Day in honor of Baruch Samuel Blumberg’s birthday. Baruch Samuel Blumberg was a Nobel Laureate. He was the man behind the discovery of HBV or hepatitis B virus and later on, developed the vaccine and diagnostic test for HBV.
