World Ocean Day is celebrated on 8 June. Air and water are the basis of life on earth. Due to being surrounded by the sea, the earth is also called a water planet. As we all know that about 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans. The purpose behind celebrating World Oceans Day is to create awareness about the benefits of the sea in human life. This opportunity is to understand how deeply human life is connected to the oceans and what is its responsibility toward the oceans. This year World Ocean Day will be observed on Wednesday, June 8, 2022.
According to oneindia.com, World Ocean Day was first proposed on 8 June 1992 at the Global Forum in Rio de Janeiro, a parallel event at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). However, in 2008 the United Nations General Assembly resolved that June 8 would be designated by the United Nations as “World Ocean Day”. The first World Ocean Day was celebrated in the year 2009 with the theme ‘Our Oceans, Our Responsibility.

The purpose of World Ocean Day is to spread awareness to people to understand the ill effects of human activities on the oceans and the impact on human life. The purpose of celebrating this day is to inform and educate the public about the impact of human actions on the oceans.
