World Tourism Day is the day for general awareness of tourism and all its social, cultural, political, and economic benefits throughout the world and is commemorated annually on 27 September everywhere in the world to spread awareness about tourism and all its social, cultural, political, and economic benefits. It was started by the United Nations organization, World Tourism Organization in 1980 to promote tourism and present it as a way towards global peace, prosperity, and understanding. Its theme would be “Tourism and Peace,” focused on job creation, inclusion, and power to local economies through tourism.
World Tourism Day came into force on 27 September 1980. The day has been chosen based on a very significant historical date, which was when the UNWTO’s first founding conference occurred on 27 September 1970. Due to this very important milestone, it was decided to observe World Tourism Day under it. The main aim of this day is to create cultural intercourse and to promote the economy as well as international peace between the countries through tourism.
The significance of tourism is not limited to cultural exchange only but rather is a great basis for the economy of most countries. This provides employment and furthers the economic development of many countries. Tourism is not only beneficial for preserving the environment but also for developing local communities as well. Through this, people get an opportunity to know and understand other cultures and traditions.
At the global level, tourism also plays an important role in promoting peace and prosperity. Tourism connects people of different countries and develops a sense of tolerance and understanding among them. It is a medium that connects us to experience diverse cultures, foreign languages, and flavors.
World Tourism Day 2024 Theme
The theme of World Tourism Day 2024: is “Tourism and Peace” The theme intends to promote the world’s peace and prosperity through tourism. Tourism not only unites people but also promotes sustainable development, job creation, and inclusion. Through tourism, mutual dialogue, and cultural exchange between countries can be promoted to instill an environment of peace and coexistence. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that tourism brings people together and strengthens local communities as well as contributes to the preservation of cultural and natural heritage.
According to data, 1,199 sites have been declared as World Heritage Sites in the world to date in 2023 out of which 933 are cultural sites, 227 are natural sites and 39 are mixed. India also boasts 43 such sites, of which 35 are cultural, 7 are natural, and one mixed site is Kanchenjunga National Park. Heritage sites function in principal ways that are precisely tourist attractions; and through this, tourist-related economic activities and employment opportunities are generated.
