World Wetlands Day is celebrated on the 2nd of February every year. The day is observed to highlight the importance of wetlands for people as well as for the Earth. In 1971, the 2nd February Convention on Wetland was adopted. This year’s theme is “It’s Time for Wetlands Restoration,” which aims to raise awareness of the urgency to prioritize wetland restoration.
What are Wetlands and why they are important?
The UN regards wetlands as a part of the ecosystem consisting of water as the primary factor for regulating the environment. It also helps in regulating animal life and water. Wetlands can be in any form such as marine as well as freshwater. They are in a form of coastal ecosystems including rivers, lakes, swamps, underground aquifers, wet grasslands, marshes, estuaries, oases, peatlands, mangroves, deltas, and tidal flats, coral reefs as well as human-made places like rice paddies, fishponds, and saltpans. Statistically, they only cover 6% of Earth’s land surface as well as 40% of animal and plant species living in the wetland.
They are an essential part of the ecosystem that helps with water purification, water regulation, and flood control.

Dangers faced by wetlands
Despite being an essential part of the environment for life sustainability they are now diminishing 3 three faster than forests and other parts of the ecosystem. They are considered the Earth’s most threatened environmental factor. As per the UN, 35% of wetland has already disappeared in the past 50 years. The reason is the overexploitation of resources, pollution, drainage, and overfishing as the major factors behind the disappearance. In order to save them. The Ramsar Convention was made. It is an international treaty for the conservation of wetlands and is named after the Iranian city of Ramsar, on the Caspian Sea. It was first signed in 1971 on the 2nd of February.
