WPl 2024: Amelia Kerr's all-round show helps Mumbai Indians beat Gujarat Giants by five wickets

In a thrilling encounter at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Mumbai Indians Women clinched a victory over Gujarat Giants Women in the Women’s Premier League 2024. All-round performances by Amelia Kerr and strong bowling by Shabnim Ismail led Mumbai Indians to a five-wicket win with 11 balls to spare.

Electing to field first, Mumbai Indians got off to a great start as Shabnim Ismail dismissed Veda Krishnamurthy for a duck in the very first over. Despite a few partnerships, Gujarat Giants could only muster 126/9 in their 20 overs. Tanuja Kanwar, Kathryn Bryce, and Beth Mooney were the top scorers for Gujarat.

Amelia Kerr was the star with the ball for Mumbai Indians, taking 4 wickets for just 17 runs. She dismissed key players like Ashleigh Gardner and Sneh Rana to derail Gujarat’s innings. Chasing 127 for victory, Mumbai Indians were led by Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten 46 and Kerr’s quickfire 31 off 25 balls.

Although Mumbai Indians had a shaky start, losing early wickets, a fourth-wicket partnership between Harmanpreet and Kerr steadied the ship. The defending champions comfortably reached the target with 11 balls to spare. This victory marked Mumbai Indians’ second win in the WPL 2024 after defeating Delhi Capital in their opening match.

With this win, Mumbai Indians showed their strength both with the bat and the ball, asserting their dominance in the Women’s Premier League. The team’s all-round performance and strategic gameplay proved too strong for Gujarat Giants, securing them a well-deserved victory.
