Yom Kippur is an auspicious festival celebrated by the Jewish community. It is also called the Day of Atonement. It is usually observed to ask for forgiveness from God for the wrongdoings and from our fellow family and friends.
It is celebrated on the last day of 10 Days of Awe which starts with Rosh Hashanah. This year i.e 2023 it will start from sunset on Sunday, September 24, 2023, and ending it on Monday, September 25, 2023.
As per old customs and beliefs, the first ever Yom Kippur was observed after the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and reached Mount Sinai. The place where the mighty god gave Moses the Ten Commandments. They came from the mountains where Moses saw his people worshipping a golden calf while shattering the sacred tablet out of anger. God decided to forgive their sins and offered Moses a second tablet.
In Judaism, Yom Kippur is regarded as the most sacred time of the year. In some cases, it is also called as “Sabbath of Sabbaths.” Some Jewish communities who do not celebrate other festivals like to refrain from work during this time as it is forbidden in Yom Kipper. They like to participate in religious activities. If you are in the U.S.A or Isreal then you will witness large camps organised for worshipping.
The time of Yom Kippur lasts from morning till evening including many religious activities such as reciting of penitential prayers and readings from the Torah. In some places, Yizkor, prayers for the recently deceased are also recited by the members. The ceremony is finally closed with a ritual horn called as shofar.
