Yuzu Emulator Dispute Ends as Tropic Haze Pays Nintendo $2.4 Million

Nintendo and Tropic Haze have reached an amicable settlement, with the latter agreeing to pay the former a sum of $2.4 million in damages.

Nintendo had sued Tropic Haze, the creator of the Switch emulator Yuzu, charging that it facilitated massive piracy and led to colossal losses for Nintendo. Both parties have agreed to a monetary settlement and a permanent injunction.

The members of Tropic Haze are also forbidden from creating any future software that circumvents Nintendo’s technical protection. Additionally, Tropic Haze has been directed to surrender all website domains and information related to its emulator.

The permanent injunction is a binding court order and any deviation by Tropic Haze would constitute a contempt of court orders and will invite stiff penalties, including punitive and monetary sanctions.

Why did Nintendo sue Tropic Haze?

Nintendo had filed a lawsuit against Yuzu’s creator, Tropic Haze, last month, alleging that when its biggest Switch release, ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’, was launched last year, its pirated version was downloaded a million times from the Yuzu platform.

What is Yuzu Emulator?

Yuzu was launched in 2018 as open-source software for various operating systems like Windows and Linux. The emulator allows the playing of different types of Switch games, such as Super Mario and Nintendo’s latest offering, ‘The Legend of Zelda’.

This is perfectly legal, but Nintendo stated that the problem arose when pirated versions of the games were played on the platform, and Yuzu also enabled the circumvention of security features to download the games.

Yuzu Creator Tropic Haze in a statement said that it will fully adhere to the judgment. It said that it will cease to offer, provide, facilitate or distribute in Yuzu or any source code or features of Yuzu. Developers have also stated it is stopping all support for the emulator immediately as well as for 3DS emulator Citra which shares many of the same developers.

It added that Yuzu and its team is against any kind of piracy and the project was started because of passion for Nintendo and its consoles and games. It was unfortunate that its platform was used to leak game content prior to its release and spoil the experience for legitimate purchasers and fans.” correct the grammar and make necessary changes
