Zomato bans restaurant owner after girl dies from online cake order

New Delhi, March 31 (IANS) Online food delivery platform Zomato has taken action after a 10-year-old girl died from consuming a birthday cake ordered from a restaurant in Patiala. The company has delisted the restaurant and barred its owner following the tragic incident.

In response to the criticism, Zomato expressed being “heartbroken and deeply shaken up” by the incident and stated, “As soon as we learnt about the incident, which is now under police investigation, we immediately delisted the restaurant from the Zomato platform.”

A case has been registered under Sections 273 and 304-A of the IPC after the girl’s family alleged that she died after eating the cake, with other family members falling ill as well. It was discovered that the bakery ‘Cake Kanha’, mentioned on the bill copy, did not exist at the address in Patiala, raising suspicions about it being a cloud kitchen operated through a different location in Amritsar.

Criticism has been directed towards Zomato for its regulation of cloud kitchens listed on the platform. The incident has sparked concerns regarding safety measures and transparency in the online food delivery industry, as netizens demand stricter protocols for such establishments.
