Zomato’s Deepinder Goyal Will Reconsider ‘Pure Veg Mode’ if it Causes Social Issues

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Zomato Co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal faced backlash on social media for introducing “Pure Veg Mode” on the platform. Goyal clarified that if there are significant negative social repercussions, the company will roll back the feature. Earlier, he announced the mode for customers with 100% vegetarian dietary preference, stating it doesn’t serve or alienate any religious or political preference.

Despite criticism, Goyal received an overwhelmingly positive response from many users. He emphasized that the feature caters to dietary preference and is not about religion or caste. The ‘Pure Veg Mode’ will curate restaurants serving only vegetarian food, excluding those with non-vegetarian items.

Goyal addressed concerns about discrimination against delivery partners with different dietary preferences. He assured that the participation in the veg delivery fleet will not discriminate based on their food choices. He also mentioned that the company will work with societies and RWAs to prevent any restrictions on Zomato’s regular fleet due to this change.

The announcement sparked a debate on social media, with some questioning the implications of segregating food preferences. However, Goyal reiterated that the decision was made to fulfill customer needs. The company will remain vigilant and address any challenges related to societal perceptions and preferences, reinforcing its commitment to social responsibility in light of the new feature.
