Zomato’s switch from green to red uniforms ignites controversy

Mumbai, March 20 (IANS) – Zomato, the popular food delivery service, has announced a major change in its branding, switching its signature green to red for its vegetarian delivery fleet. The decision has sparked a colorful debate on social media.

In a lengthy statement, Zomato Founder-CEO Deepinder Goyal explained the move, stating that all vehicles, including riders, will now be painted red, irrespective of the type of orders they deliver. This change aims to prevent any confusion or physical safety risks for the riders.

Goyal clarified that the shift to red uniforms for all delivery partners will eliminate any association with non-vegetarian food, ensuring a smooth experience for both customers and riders. The decision comes after instances where non-veg food spilled onto delivery boxes, leading to customer dissatisfaction.

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union President, Shaik Salauddin, raised questions about the filtering of riders based on dietary preferences. Goyal, however, assured that feedback from customers will be taken into consideration, highlighting the company’s willingness to adapt.

Social media users quickly pointed out statistics from the National Family Health Survey-5, revealing that only 19% of Indians are pure vegetarians. The data showed state-wise preferences, with Rajasthan and Haryana topping the list at 56% each, while others like Kerala had only 1% pure vegetarians.

Zomato’s move to switch to red for its vegetarian fleet reflects a broader shift in consumer preferences and the company’s commitment to adapting to feedback. As the debate continues, the company remains open to addressing concerns and making necessary adjustments to enhance customer experience.
